Windsocks in the Wind
Students made their own windsocks to see which way the wind was blowing. We talked about the sometimes confusing concept of naming winds by the direction they are coming FROM, not the direction they are blowing to. Since they have had firsthand experience making these lovely windsocks, students are primed as experts for our How To book about this subject! How To books are the focus of our new writing unit. We are excited to share our digital poetry collections with you on the 31st to celebrate the finish of our poetry unit.
March Photos
Here you'll see students sampling the temperatures of sand, air and water. You'll also see students playing sight word bingo, and finally, from today...students working collaboratively to draft our class book about how to make a windsock.

Literacy Centers
Students were very enthusiastic about getting to do literacy centers today. They played Word Bingo on ipads, practiced word wall words with Wicki Stix, did language lacers and matching word puzzles. Ask your child which center was his or her favorite.
Evaporation and Condensation
So far students have observed two parts of the water cycle. By putting their water cycle jars in the sun, students were able to see that some of their water had evaporated up and then condensed in drops under the plastic lid. Students wrote about their observations.

Mini Water Cycles
In our discussions about weather, students have learned some new terms...water cycle, evaporation, condensation and precipitation. Some students recently chose to post their cloud flip books, showing three different types of clouds (condensation) on the blog. Today in pairs, students put together mini water cycles to see if we can observe the whole water cycle on a smaller scale. Students had many wonderings and predictions about what will happen.
Measurement
In math students have been measuring objects with various non-standard units, such as plastic cubes. Today we played a game where students tried to "fool" each other about the lengths of different strips of paper...by hiding the endpoints behind a folder. Students have learned the importance of starting with the same endpoint or starting line when comparing the length of two or more objects. They have also been working on ordering three objects from shortest to longest. Ask your child to find three objects at home and order them for you from shortest to longest or longest to shortest!
Temperatures Around the World
First graders are using an app called Wundermaps to collect temperatures from cities all over the world. They are comparing temperatures in different cities and looking for change in temperatures from day to day. Try this app at home!
