Liquid + Solid = Gas!

Today we experimented by mixing
vinegar and baking soda to create a gas. Ask your child how we trapped some of the gas (and what happened to the rest!)

What is Area?

Welcome back from Spring break! In class Sunday students enjoyed sharing and writing about their holiday adventures. We also began exploring a new part of our measurement unit in math...area. We talked about how area is the amount of space something covers, like a rug on a floor or a tablecloth on a table. Students practiced the idea by covering the entire area of a sheet of newspaper with paint. They have also practiced measuring the area of objects in the classroom with two different units of measurement...post-its and square pattern blocks. We are working on making smart estimations as well, so we are estimating each time before we measure and are even practicing with an estimation jar. Today students wrote reflections to go with their paintings, explaining how they knew they had covered the entire area with paint. Tomorrow we move on to yet another measurable quantity...weight!
