Pics from Portfolio Share

Here are some photos from our portfolio share earlier this week. It was amazing to look back at the children's work and see how much they have grown this year. Enjoy these and please see below for pictures from our space party, as well as a big thank you to you all!

Out of This World!

Dear Families,
What a fun end to the year! We started the day watching Wall-E in the Bosch Center, followed by our fantastic space-themed party in the cafeteria. Students made solar snack mix, decorated star cookies, constructed tube-rockets and enjoyed a feast which included robot juice boxes and rocket fruit kebabs. Admission tickets to the party were students' very own Wall-E glasses. Thank you very much to all our wonderful volunteer parents for making this party so special. It was a perfect way to end our year. And sincere thanks to all of you for the lovely class gift. The framed tree picture with all the student's fingerprints is a treasure...as is the relaxation I'll enjoy with the spa certificate! It has been a privilege spending time with and guiding your children this year. I am proud of all of them and I wish you all a wonderful holiday. Enjoy this time with your now-second-graders! Love, Mrs. Mongardi

We Can't Wait...

...to see you at our Portfolio Share Sunday! We have been hard at work, learning all we can about our solar system, publishing our very own realistic fiction stories and reflecting on our work samples from the year. We'll see you at 8:45 in the classroom Sunday. It will be short and sweet - we plan to be done by 9:15. Students were very excited to look through their portfolios today in preparation for your visit. I heard many exclamations of "I remember this!" "Oh, I love this!" and "Wow, look!" as they delighted in looking back at their own work. Just wait until you see how their work has changed since September. Students are so proud that they might just want to wear something fancy for the share. And if not, that is okay too. Everyone should have a P.E. uniform to change into later in the day if they choose to wear something special for the share. Make sure you read the E.S. newsletter for some great summer learning tips and links from the Parent Coffee earlier this week.

Creating Characters

Our writers are getting to know realistic fiction by learning all about the Cynthia Rylant series Henry and Mudge. Students have begun developing their own main characters to write about. Next we will tackle possible settings and problems to feature in our stories.

Save the Date

Today you will find an invitation like this in your child's folder. We hope you will be able to join us on June 8th at 8:45 for your child's portfolio share. The share should take about 30 minutes only so we should finish by 9:15 on that day.

Book Character Day

How-to Book Share

Today students were thrilled to share their procedural writing that they have been working so hard on for weeks! Students collected compliments on stars from their grade one peers. And thanks to our fabulous room moms, students were reminded that they are all STARS with a yummy starry treat afterward.

First Graders Feel Like Dancing

Shoo Rayner Visits with Grade One

Mr. Rayner entertained and inspired us with his illustration and spooooky storytelling.

Assembly

This week we had an exciting assembly, including a "visit" from Jane Goodall and our first encounter with visiting author Shoo Rayner. The ES welcomed Mr. Rayner with our very own flash mob, thanks to coordination from music teacher Ms. Kerr.

Liquid + Solid = Gas!

Today we experimented by mixing
vinegar and baking soda to create a gas. Ask your child how we trapped some of the gas (and what happened to the rest!)
